Recently, I attended two separate marketing events that had three things in common: the sponsors were in the same type of business (assisted living) and neither sponsor managed to make the most of the event they sponsored, and neither personalized water bottles nor personalized coffee mugs come into play though they would have been effective.

Actually, a lot of promotional products would have been effective, not just personalized water bottles.

They got the people to attend. They had brochures. They asked people if they'd like to have a tour of the facilities, about a dozen of the 30 or 40 people in attendance wanted to. And all those people got was a tour, a brochure and a business card.

At the end of the event, the sponsors gave away a prize, a basked with 2 wine bottles, two glasses and 2 candles. None of them personalized. But it was the wine bottles that got me to think that they could have given personalized water bottles to those who were interested enough to take a 20-minute tour of the facilities.

Think about it. Personalized water bottles are not quite as popular as personalized coffee mugs or pens, but they are effective. People do use water bottles all the time. There's lots of space on a water bottle for you to put your logo, your website, etc. But, as I said, personalized coffee mugs are more popular, they have enough space for proper personalization.

I know a handful of the people who attended, all at the time in life when they have to consider assisted living for their parents, all of them drink coffee daily.

According to a study by the Advertising Specialty Institute, people keep personalized coffee mugs for seven months (average) and a quarter of them keep them for over one year. That's a lot of chances to have them see your message. And, if you're a business like the two I'm talking about where people take their time doing research, choosing the finalist, giving one to people who're interested in your product or service, gives you quite an advantage.

Here are five questions you should have an answer to before you run a promotional campaign with personalized coffee mugs.

Be clear on what you want to accomplish. Ideally, you should want to accomplish something where results can be tracked.

Make sure you have the right message. Personalized coffee mugs with a logo on them look good, but is your logo enough? Having your website address would be better. Having a call to action, say, Visit YourWebsiteAddress.com, would be even better, especially if there's room to give a reason why they should visit.

Quality trumps quantity. Neither the cups nor the personalization should be perceived as cheap.

Don't rely on the personalized coffee mugs to do all the work. By that I mean, use them in tandem with other methods of marketing. If your goal is to get your people to set up more appointments, have a contest going on too, email messages, etc. If your goal is to get prospective customers to visit your web site, follow up with post cards, emails, phone calls.

Be clear on how you distribute them. I mean, how you physically transfer the personalized coffee mugs from your possession to the prospective client's possession. I also mean, how do you present it?

Personalized coffee mugs are one of the most useful promotional products out there. Many businesses do not use them or don't use them effectively. They can be used to reward people (either customers or staff). They can be used to spread the word about you. They can be used to get people do take a particular action, or to do it more often. If you keep the five tips above in mind, you're off to a good start.
